8 Common Misconceptions About Acne (Check Out the Last!)

how to cure acne

There are quite a few old wives’ tales circulating when it comes to acne. From claiming that toothpaste can replace the best acne products, expert-wannabes still continue to spread false information. But before ruining your face, take a look on our 10 common misconceptions about dealing with your acne.

Myth #1: The more you wash your face, the better.
Washing your face  removes dirt that causes pimples. But washing your face too much causes dryness and irritation and this can lead to breakouts. A rule of thumb for everyone is to wash their face twice a day with the best acne products in a circular motion and gently pat it when you’re done.

Frequency is not the key when using these acne products. It’s consistency!

#2: Acne goes away on its own.
Clogged pores cause pimples and unless you take actions by using products that can unclog your pores, your pimples will continue to multiply. It will never go away on its own.

#3: Sleeping late causes breakouts.
Experts never object that stress is one of the causes of breakouts. But just because someone sleeps late, it doesn't mean he’s gonna have breakouts. How come, you may ask?

Can't you sleep late for 8 hours? The cause is the stress, not your sleeping time.

#4: The more product I put, the more effective it will be.
Some people, when they found the product that is best working for them, they tend to dispense greater amount than usual believing that it will give them greater results. But instead of achieving a clearer and youthful face, they end up looking irritated, stressed and old.

When using a product, always read carefully the instructions. If it suggests 4 drops, don't exceed to that amount. If it says use only at night time, strictly use it at night time.

#5: Facial wash is enough. Some are just waste of money.
The truth is facial wash is not enough! One needs to use toner or cleanser after washing his face to further remove the deeply-seated dirt that a facial wash failed to remove. Furthermore, these facial wash or soaps leave residue to the face which can clog the pores and eventually can cause you breakouts. The only solution to remove the residue accumulated on your pores is to use toner or cleanser.

However, toners and cleansers usually cause dryness. To avoid it, it is suggested to use moisturizers and/or night cream as the culminating part of the skin care routine. But that still depends on your skin type. People with oily faces are not required to use moisturizer anymore as it will trigger the secretion of sebum more.

 #6: Makeup causes breakouts.
Makeups clog one’s pores and may cause breakouts but they are not all the same. Some makeups are especially made for acne-prone skin and they are even intended fight acne! Many dermatologists suggest powder-based foundation with ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Such powder and ingredients are used to absorb excess sebum on the face that is one of the root causes of breakouts.

#7: Don't pop your pimple. It's bad!
People who are concerned of you have probably once warned you to stop popping your whiteheads and blackheads because it will leave you pock marks and scars. True but not all the times. Popping doesn’t give you pock marks when done properly.

If you tried to go for a facial, an aesthetician would use a tool called extractor. She would use this tool to remove your blackheads buried in different areas of your face. Popping is practiced by these skin care professionals but it never causes you any single scar. The reason is because 1) their tools are sterilized and 2) they know which to pop.

When they pop your whiteheads or blackheads, they would instruct you not to wash your face for a few hours. That's because washing your face after popping digs your skin deeper and it will surely leave pock marks and scars on your face.

Popping is not always bad.  Just let the skin care professionals do the job.

#8: I need to use warm water so my pores will “open” and cold so it will “close.”
Many people believe that pores have the ability to open and close. Pores do not have muscles so it is impossible that they can open or close as it reacts to a certain temperature. No mater how long you steam your face, it will never stimulate your pores to open.

There are some over-the-counter products that claim to have a pore minimizer capability. They don’t essentially minimize your pores but they just make them look smaller. There are certain ways on how to make your pores look smaller. One is removing excess oil and build-up of dead cells.

What Does Sunscreen Do and Why Should You ALWAYS Wear It (Backed by Science)

11:15 PM 0 Comments

what does sunscreen do

Sunblock acts as a shield of the largest organ of the human body – the skin. It protects your skin by blocking the harmful UV rays which can penetrate whenever you are under the sun. People’s skin types vary and some wonder if sunblock is really necessary.

It is highly recommended for most people with normal to dry skin to wear sunblock. For people with sensitive skin, some ingredients of sunblock may cause irritation so it’s a good practice to always check the label. Ask your dermatologist which ingredients you should look out for before applying sunblock.

The Top Reason You Should Wear Sunblock (Backed by Science)
People have daily routines to maintain young and beautiful skin but some forego using sunblock.  It can be easy to forget, especially if you don’t see anything different on your skin. But that doesn’t always mean there’s nothing wrong going on.

Skin cancer rates are on the rise in the past couple of years. According to experts, around 90% of skin cancer cases [1] are linked to frequent exposure of the skin to the sun’s destructive radiation. Studies [2] show sunblock helps prevent skin cancer. Australian researchers called Green conducted a study about how regular use of sunblock can prevent melanoma. It was a controlled human trial that ended with one verdict: Sunblock helps prevent melanoma and other types of skin cancers. While the effects of using sunblock daily are not felt every day it’s applied, it is beneficial in the long run.

The Benefits of Wearing Sunblock
Aside from the already established fact that wearing sunblock helps prevent skin cancer, there are plenty of reasons why sunblock is good for you. Let’s get to them one by one, shall we?

1. Sunblock prevents premature aging.
We all want healthy and younger looking skin. To achieve this, wearing sunblock is the perfect way to start. Sunblock shields our skin from developing the signs of skin aging like fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Sunblock helps in achieving healthy skin.
The skin has proteins like collagen, keratin, and elastin. All these proteins, which aids in keeping the skin smooth and healthy, are protected by sunblock. When looking for the best sunblock, look for the ingredient “Titanium Oxide” to ensure you got the right product.

3. Sunblock helps prevent sunburns and tanning due to harsh UVB.
Tan is healthy except when it’s caused by the harmful UVB. When your skin burns, the next things that can possibly happen are skin redness, swelling, hives, peeling, and itching. You’ll then have blisters, which can further develop to a form of skin cancer, if not detected at an early stage. Avoid this from happening by using sunblock.

Wear Sunblock Everyday
Do not go out without protecting your skin. Apply the best sunblock at least 30 minutes before you are outdoors. Lather a generous amount in your skin and all areas of your body which can be exposed to the sun. Taking action to protecting your skin now can mean living a life without skin cancer down the road.

It’s known that a red nose and signify an unsettled stomach, hypertension, and a sudden rush of hormones. To prevent and eliminate the pimples, take it easy on alcohol, eat more meat, and consume less acidic foods.

Mouth Acne

This is mostly caused by a hormone imbalance and tends to be more common in women. If it appears regularly, chances are that there is some kind of issue with your reproductive system. No worries though! Changing your diet and being aware of chemical exposure can help you put the balance back and eliminate pimple exposure. Eat more vegetables and stay away from greasier foods. If you already eat very healthy, consider switching face washes or toothpastes.

The Asian Double Cleansing Routine (Inspired by Ivan Lam)

10:16 PM , , 1 Comments

how to remove makeup properly

Whether you’re working a day job or not, whenever you go outdoors, your skin will be exposed to harmful elements in the air. Dirt and dust accumulate on your face which can harm your skin and cause clogged pores.  For this reason, it’s a must to take your makeup off before you go to bed. Not only will sleeping with your makeup on cause you serious acne problems but it can also destroy healthy collagen in your skin.

Your evening beauty ritual should include taking off your makeup the proper way. To help you get started, here is an easy-to-follow guide to proper makeup removal.

Take Your Makeup Off Using Asian Double Cleansing Routine
Removing makeup is one of the crucial steps to proper skin care. If done the right way, it will help you achieve a beautiful and radiant skin. Ready? Let’s start the makeup removal process.
Products used in this tutorial:

1. Take off makeup starting with your eyes using a cotton pad with oil.
Whether you want to start with your left eye or right, it’s up to you. Use Kose Softymo-White Cleansing Oil. Make sure your cotton pad has enough cleansing oil before you apply it to your eye.

Keep the cotton pad on top of your eye and let the oil do its job, which is to dissolve the makeup. Do not move it or try to scrub it in your eye. After about thirty seconds to a minute, repeat the same process on your other eye. You’ll see how effective it is in removing all your eye makeup.

When both eyes are makeup free, gently brush the cotton pad to your eyebrows.

2. Remove the makeup on your face.
This time, instead of using a cotton pad, pour the cleansing oil directly to both of your hands then massage your face in circular motion. You’ll notice in a couple of seconds how makeup is removed effortlessly.

3. Wash your face with warm water.
You’ll notice how the warm water causes the oil to turn into a milky and foamy texture. Continue massaging your face for about one minute then splash warm water again as a final step.

4. Dry your face using a clean and soft face towel.
Gently pat your face with the towel. If you use water-proof mascara, check your eyelids to see if there’s anything left. If there is, get a Q-tip and pour oil on it. Then gently clean your lash line to remove the remaining makeup in your eyelids. Wash your face with warm water again then tap dry.

5. Apply a pea-sized amount of cream cleanser to your face.
You can use either Olay Brightening Cream Cleanser or Aveeno Clear Complexion Cream Cleanser. Both are known for their hydrating effects on the skin. Using a pea-sized amount, massage the cream cleanser all over your face gently. With these products, you can avoid the tightness and that squeaky feeling you get with other cleansers. Wash with warm water.

6. Use cold water for the final two splashes.
Cold water closes your pores. Once your face is clean, dry it by tapping gently with a face towel.

7. Apply alcohol-free toner.
An alcohol-free toner removes the residue left on your face. Once done, your skin is ready to absorb any other beauty products you use as part of your evening beauty ritual.

Follow this simple guide every night and you’ll be amazed at how it can help you achieve younger looking skin. By following this simple Asian Double Cleansing Routine, you’ll get that impeccable skin and beautiful face you can be proud of anywhere you go.

What is CC Cream? (Everything You Need to Know About It)

9:14 PM 0 Comments

what is cc cream

Everybody wants to have a radiant and blemish-free skin. But let's admit it, doing it the natural way is quite slow and sometimes, ineffective. However, we still have a handful makeup alternatives such as CC cream that can give us the blemish-free skin that we always wanted to achieve INSTANTLY!

What is CC cream?
CC cream is one of the most-sought facial care products in the market. CC stands for “color correcting.” This cream corrects issues like redness and sallowness. They are used to improve skin tone and to nurture the skin especially the oily one.  Additionally, it offers benefits such as the treatment of uneven skin tone and anti-aging.

This cream instantly covers blemishes and other noticeable spots on your face. One of its amazing features is that the color changes as the product is rubbed on the skin. It naturally mimics the skin color as it oxidizes and as a result one can achieve a dewy and rejuvenated skin tone. You wouldn't even know that you put something on your face. It's super natural looking!

What’s the difference between CC Cream and BB Cream?
There has been a big confusion between CC and BB cream. CC Cream focuses at color correction .It contains a skin brightening primer, a light foundation, moisturizer, sunscreen some anti-ageing ingredients and sometimes some collagen boosters.

On the side of the fence, BB Cream stands for “beauty balm.” This product is a Jack-of-all-trades: it is a non-brightening Palmer, a light foundation moisturizer and sunscreen in one with some built in anti-ageing properties.

Moreover, BB cream tends to be heavier and better for dry skin, with a major focus on prevention and maintenance of the skin. However for the CC cream, it tends to be to lighter; thus, this explains why CC cream better for acne-prone skin.

Conclusion
CC Cream can be used as a substitute to your foundation. It may cover some of your blemishes but just like BB cream, you may need additional concealers for extreme areas to give you greater coverage.

7 Things You Ought to Know About Sunburn

8:02 PM 0 Comments

how to treat sunburn

Being overexposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun or tanning lights can get your skin burned. The skin damage it can cause is long lasting and wrinkle inducing. Aside from that, you can also be at risk of developing melanoma, an aggressive type of skin cancer.

As we all know, prevention is better than cure. But in instances that you weren’t able to avoid getting a sun burn, here are seven helpful tips to minimize the pain, prevent an infection, soothe your badly burned skin, and hopefully avoid getting sunburned in the future.

1. Assess how bad the sunburn is.
If you think that your sunburn is worse you can’t do home medication, seek medical attention right away.

2. Take in some pain reliever.
As soon as you see the surefire signs of sunburn, take in an aspirin or Ibuprofen immediately. They will help reduce the pain you feel as well as the redness and swelling that can possibly occur. Depending on how bad the sunburn is, they may or may not be able to help in reducing inflammation.

3. Moisturize your skin.
Take a cool bath or shower. Make sure to keep the water temperature to lukewarm to slightly cold. Instead of brushing the towel over the body part with sunburn, opt to air dry or pat it gently to avoid further pain on the skin. Then apply a moisturizer (lotion or cream) that has glycerin or aloe and is rich in Vitamin E and Vitamin C to help soothe the skin a bit. You can also apply a hydrocortisone ointment or cream for a couple of days.

4. Apply cold compress.
Get a wash cloth or a towel and dampen it with cold water. Apply it over the body part with sun burn for around 20 to 30 minutes. You can also use a cold milk compress to speed up the process of relieving the inflammation.

5. Wear loose clothes.
Wearing tight and fit clothes will make your skin feel “suffocated”. Allow it to breathe so the healing process will be fast, too. It’s highly suggested to wear loose clothing like baggy jeans and t-shirts, especially on areas that were sunburned. Put on cotton instead of synthetic fabrics to avoid irritation.

6. Stay hydrated.
Drinking lots of water helps restore your energy. You can also try eating fruits with rich water in them like grapes, watermelon, honeydew lemon, and cantaloupe. Additionally, you can hydrate with a sports drink.

7. Avoid future instances of getting sunburn.
Minimize the times you will be exposed in the sun. If you need to be back out in the sunshine, make sure you wear a hat matched with clothing that covers your skin. Bringing an umbrella won’t hurt, too. More importantly, don’t go out in the sun without wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply it as needed.

As much as we want to avoid sunburn, there are times it still happens. So to avoid it from getting worse, treat it the moment you notice the tell-tale signs.
